Mendenhall River School September 4th 1993 (Saturday) 9:00AM | Distance: 5 kilometers, with a one mile walk Location: Mendenhall River School, the covered area behind the school Start Time: 9:00 AM Race Director: Margaret Feige and Craig Farrington Registration Fee: 10 dollars preregistered and 13 on race day for ages 14 and up, 5 and 7 for 13 and under Contact: Foggy Mountain Shop or the Juneau Racquet Club The second Beat the Odds, an all-women's awareness run in the fight against breast cancer, founded the year before by Cathy Bressette. It moved from 14 August to 4 September to avoid a clash with the Golden North Salmon Derby. Merry Ellefson won the run in 18:30, nearly two minutes clear of Joann Quigg in 20:19, with Cecile Elliott third in 21:13. Cathy Bressette finished 45th in 25:16. Monika Bethers and Lena Darnall shared the fastest walk at 10:11. 124 ran and 270 walked - a bigger field than the almost 300 runners and walkers of the first year. Sponsored by the Alaska Health Fair, Forget-Me-Not Floral of Petersburg, the Inlandboatmen's Union Alaska Region, the Juneau Empire, KINY and KSUP, Southeast Roadrunners, Temsco and the U.S. Coast Guard Women's Club. The first 300 to register got a long-sleeve shirt, and free mammograms were offered to a limited number at the Women's Wellness Event that October. Savikko Park (Sandy Beach) Douglas. August 7th 1993 (Saturday) 8:00AM | Start Time: 8:00 AM Location: Sandy Beach, Savikko Park, Douglas Distances: 26.2 miles and 13.1 miles Race Director: Bob Deal Course: out and back from Sandy Beach to the end of the Douglas Highway. The second running, and both course records fell. John Snoozy of Lincoln, Nebraska, running for the National Guard Marathon Team, won in 2:44:14 and took nearly half an hour off the mark set the year before. Jim Douglas was second in 2:45:56, the only Juneau runner in the top six, and Kevin McAllister of the Bronx third in 2:46:58. Dawn Rider set a women's record by about ten minutes, finishing in 3:28:42 - and entered on the Friday night, right before registration closed, having heard a radio report about the marathon. "I just decided to do it," she said. She had planned to run the half-marathon. "I was shooting for a finish time between 3:30 and four hours. So I did pretty well." Three weeks earlier she had completed the 28-mile Crow Pass Wilderness Marathon near Anchorage. Snoozy found the course harder than it looks to anyone who drives it. "There is a lot of up-downhill, and if you do not run it right you waste a lot of time early. I ran with Jim for the first half, and he was giving me hints about what to do. The name of the game is to run with people. That is the thing with marathoners." Douglas, who missed a personal best by about two minutes, had meant it as a training run for Portland "but I just could not resist. I led for the first two miles, but I saw no sense in me leading, so we ran together for about 13 miles - then he came on real strong. He is a good runner." The marathon drew 26 entrants and 25 finished, more than tripling the first year's turnout, with nine runners from outside Juneau. Ten came with the National Guard team, which competes against the other armed services in three races a year. Rick Janowicz of Whitehorse ran his third marathon of the year here - Boston in 3:22, Whitehorse in 3:28, and 3:33 in Juneau: "So I am getting worse." Ray Scharenbrock of Milwaukee read about the race in Runners World, flew up to run it, and marked his 60th birthday by finishing in 4:27:51. Mendenhall Glacier April 17th 1993 (Saturday) 10:00AM | Distance: 10 kilometers and 1 mile Location: Mendenhall Glacier Rick Thibodeau won the 10K in 34:00 from Alan Graves in 35:55 and Steven Schmitz in 36:00. Jerry Boyd won the mile in 5:54, one second ahead of Joe Koch. 54 ran the 10K and 51 the mile. The mile was plainly a family race - the last three finishers took over 25 minutes - and it drew almost as many runners as the 10K. Old Douglas School February 13th 1993 (Saturday) 10:00AM | Distance: two miles and three miles, run as a two person relay Location: the old Douglas School, out and back through Douglas and along the Douglas Highway Start Time: 10:00 AM Race Director: Wendy Marriott The 11th Sweetheart Relay, put on by Juneau Parks and Recreation for the 11th year running and the first race of the 1993 Empire Cup Runners Series. Conditions were spring-like, mostly dry, with an ice-free running surface. Glenn Frick and Merry Ellefson won in 30:14 from Dawn Rider and Bob Deal in 31:53, and Laura Lee Nelson and Del Stewart were third in 32:46. Deal had the fastest three mile leg at 17:45, and Ellefson at 18:35 the fastest by a woman and the second fastest of anyone. Frick led the two mile leg in 11:39 from Jay Greiner in 12:48 and Doug Weaver in 12:51, with Margaret Fiege quickest among the women in 13:54. 21 couples ran.
