Glacier July 28th 1978 (Friday) 10:00AM | The 26 mile CBJ Juneau Marathon, run by the Juneau Parks and Recreation Department. DATE: recorded as 28 July 1978, which is the only date any source gives for this race - the Juneau Empire of 8 June 1978 announced the department's marathon as "scheduled for July 28". Two caveats worth carrying: that is an announcement rather than a report, and 28 July 1978 was a FRIDAY, where every other race in this record falls on a Saturday. Saturday the 29th is the obvious alternative if a results clipping ever settles it. The event previously carried 10 June 1978, which cannot be right: the Empire describes that Saturday as a 10-mile and 6-mile Road Run held as TRAINING for this marathon. That Road Run is recorded separately, as is the Parks and Recreation mini-marathon of 15 July - 1978 had at least three of these races. The start time of 10:00 AM is a default, not a reported figure. Mendenhall Glacier parking lot, Juneau July 15th 1978 (Saturday) 8:00AM | Distance: 13 1/2 miles and 2 miles Location: Mendenhall Glacier parking lot Start Time: 8:00 AM for the two mile, 8:30 AM for the 13 1/2 Registration Fee: 1 dollar, from half an hour before each start A mini-marathon sponsored by Juneau Parks and Recreation, over two courses from the Glacier parking lot. The longer distance is 13 1/2 miles rather than the standard half marathon of 13.1. The notice says the courses "have been established", which in 1970s Juneau meant measured locally to whatever the road gave. No results are held for this running. Mendenhall Glacier parking lot, Juneau June 10th 1978 (Saturday) 9:00AM | Distance: 10 miles and 6 miles Location: Mendenhall Glacier parking lot Start Time: 9:00 AM Registration Fee: 1 dollar A road run held by Juneau Parks and Recreation. The six mile course ran from the Glacier parking lot to Auke Bay School; the ten mile went along the back Loop Road and finished back at the Glacier. Refreshments afterwards, and a certificate for every finisher. Aimed at occasional joggers as much as at racers. "We want to encourage people who are occasional joggers to come," said coordinator Mary Hakala, a marathon runner who had raced in Europe and at Boston. "It's not so much fun to run alone." The second in a series of summer events organised jointly by the Taku Striders and Juneau Parks and Recreation, and promoted as training for the department's own marathon that July.
